 Who needs a representative airplane when the vibrancy of America's greatest city is put to paper by Pursell for American Airlines, the result being a geomorphic cityscape set in motion with a series of precisely-rendered, slashing streaks. Pursell was born in Tennessee and studied at the Chicago Art Institute. He started as an illustrator for Life, Esquire, Forbes and other publications. In posters, he produced some of the finest American Art Deco designs for Coca-Cola, American Airlines, Standard Oil, the Chicago World's Fair and others, but his work is extremely difficult to find today. This piece is in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art in NYC.
